BELIEVING
IS SEEING
Rev. Mark Stafford |
The scriptures tell us in Hebrews 11:1 that "Faith is
being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we
do not see." We have all heard the cliché "I'll believe
it when I see it." What is clear, through scripture, is
that those who call upon the name of the Lord must counter
with "I'll see it when I believe it." Continuing on in
Hebrews 11 in verse 6 we find that "without Faith it is
impossible to please God." If Faith is defined as "being
sure of that which we don't presently see" and without
that Faith we cannot please God, then as children of God
it must be natural for us to not only believe in all of
God's promises but to see and call them complete even
if our natural eyes reveal the contrary. The difficulty
in this process is just that. Many times our natural sight
is contrary to our spiritual sight. As we walk out our
relationship with God, so often our flesh determines what
we believe about God and His actions toward us.
What God is saying to us in Hebrews 11:1 & 6, and throughout
His Word from Genesis to Revelation, is that His children
are first and foremost spirit. The physical body is simply
the container for our spirit. God desires for us to walk,
talk and think in the spirit and by doing so the physical
will receive what the spirit achieves. Sadly, we often
hear from Christian men and women these two misguided
statements: "He's too heavenly minded to be of any earthly
good" and "To be balanced we must be Christians with a
brain." The danger in these statements is that what they
are really saying is "we can't trust the Holy Spirit to
rightly guide us in all things and through all things
with perfect balance and wisdom." What they are saying
is that "one must kick in the earthly brain to balance
out the extremes of the Holy Spirit." What they are saying
is "trust your physical eyes over your spiritual eyes."
We can be ever thankful that our God is bigger than that,
much bigger. Yes, it is the spirit which is reborn. It
is the spirit which is made pure. It is the spirit which
is eternal. Therefore, we must walk in the spirit, talk
in the spirit and believe in the spirit.
God wants His children to be bigger than their flesh and
to have knowledge and wisdom beyond the physical mind.
1 Corinthians 2:14 tells that "the man without the spirit
does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of
God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand
them, because they are spiritually discerned." Spiritual
wisdom transcends physical wisdom; therefore, spiritual
reality transcends physical reality. Anyone can believe
in something they already have. They look and see it held
tightly in their hand. It is the born again believer,
filled with and guided by the Holy Spirit, that believes
in and sees what the spirit is doing. Physical sight can
be 20/20. Spiritual sight cannot he measured but it can
be limited by unbelief. Seeing isn't believing, believing
is seeing.
